Plot
Sharmas opulent costume drama set in the Gupta period (4th C.) is a remake of his 1941 film. With Kumari in the title role of the court dancer, her romance with Samant Beejagupta leads to questions of infidelity, the futility of love and corrupt ascetics. The film contributed to Meena Kumaris image as the archetyal courtsean in costume sepctaculars (of Pakeezah, 1971), although its garish colours and costume design betray the degenaration of Sharmas work since his b&w romances. [Source: Encl] *.* "Chitralekha" is a story of a charming Court dancer, who lived during the glorious period of the Gupta King-Samrat Chandragupta. . Samant Beejgupta, a friend of Chandragupta sees Chitralekha and falls in love with her. He is willing to sacrifice everything for her love. Chitralekha too returns his love. . But Samant Beejgupta is engaged to a young girl, Yashodhra whose father comes to know of the love affair between Chitralekha and Beejgupta. He goes to one Yogi Kumargiri and requests him to stop Chitralekha from loving Beejgupta. Yogi Kumargiri explains to Chitralekha her duties, but she did not care for the Yogis advice. . Chitralekha one day realises the futility of love and all worldiness. "What is life?" she asks herself. She remembers Yogi Kumargiri.
