The story revolves around an idler teenager named Karan (Tusshar Kapoor), who plays truant and abhors education. Despite his poor performance at school, he displays other talents; he is clever, an excellent musician, and plays in a band. His father expresses his disappointment in Karan vocally and regularly, often leading Karan to fits of annoyance and anger. The indolent Karan sets his eyes on Pooja (Kareena Kapoor) for the first time on a deserted street and falls in love with her in that very instant. Following this, he tries to search for her but is unsuccessful in his efforts. He slowly begins to lose hope in his quest, quits playing music, and decides to move to another city with his uncle. While on his way there, his car breaks down and he is forced to hitch a ride in a passing car. Karan hails a car, and to his astonishment, Pooja. His joy knows no bounds and as Pooja drives, they introduce themselves to each other. Inadvertently, a truck collides with the car, and it falls into a valley. Karan and Pooja find themselves hanging from a cliff and even though Karan manages to haul Pooja back up the precipice, his hands come loose and he falls into the ravine.

Once Pooja regains consciousness, she assumes responsibility for Karan's death and offers to help in the search for his body. Meanwhile, Karan has managed to survive the fall, but is badly wounded and unconscious. He is soon found by a man who takes him to the hospital. Soon after, Karan is reunited with his family. As he recovers, his mind reverts to how he should have confessed his love to Pooja in the few moments they spent together. His accident also brings a revelation, and he begins to focus on his education instead of his music. Later, Pooja arrives at at his doorstep to apologize. She offers Karan her friendship and the two become good friends. In time, Pooja tells Karan that she must leave for the United States of America for higher education. Devastated, he finally confesses his love for her. Pooja also cannot deny her feelings for Karan, and promises him that she will return to him once she completes her education. Karan agrees to patiently await her return.
